In February, Vic Fangio met with the San Francisco 49ers, and some felt he might join the team as a consultant for the 2022 season. However, it was later reported that the longtime coach would be taking a year off.
Fangio served as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator from 2011-14 before serving in the same role with the Chicago Bears (2015-18) and then the Denver Broncos head coach (2019-21). San Francisco looked to bring Fangio back when Kyle Shanahan became the head coach in 2017, but Fangio couldn’t get out of his contract with the Bears.
Fangio is back in Santa Clara—for today, at least. The 63-year-old coach was on hand to observe the start of the 49ers’ three-day rookie minicamp. Maybe he will have a future—in some role—in Santa Clara after all, whenever he decides to return to the game.

It looked like the 49ers might have to search for a new defensive coordinator for the second year in a row after teams expressed interest in DeMeco Ryans, who replaced Robert Saleh in 2021. The Minnesota Vikings interviewed Ryans, and it was reported that the Las Vegas Raiders might be interested too. However, Ryans opted to decline a second interview with the Vikings and remain with the 49ers.
“I’m proud of him for doing it,” Shanahan said on February 1 when asked about Ryans declining the second interview. “Minnesota’s a great place, but DeMeco is a stud. DeMeco is going to be a head coach. He’s too good not to be, whether it’s this year, whether it’s next year, whether it’s anytime, but DeMeco’s going to be a head coach . … But he’s only going to get stronger every year that he coaches, regardless of what he’s coaching.
“But it was cool that he had the confidence to make that decision. Whatever he thought was best for him and his family. And I know we’re very gratefully he did because it makes the Niners better, and I think it’s going to make him continues to get better too.”
Second-year quarterback Trey Lance also stopped by the practice session to get a look at the 49ers’ latest group of rookies.

Most expect Lance to be the 49ers’ starting quarterback in 2022 after serving as Jimmy Garoppolo’s backup in 2021 and playing just 178 snaps during his rookie campaign.

San Francisco 49ers rookie wideout Danny Gray spoke with the media for the first time since his draft interview, as he prepared for the 49ers’ rookie minicamp, which is slated to begin on Friday. Gray, who was selected with the last pick in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 105th overall, is a player with electrifying straight-line speed, which was confirmed with his 4.33 40-yard dash at the combine. However, Gray’s talents aren’t limited to just his speed; he works well with the ball in his hands and can be physical after the catch, despite his relatively slight 186-pound frame. When addressing his skillset, Gray acknowledged the biggest development over his

49ers to start 3-day rookie minicamp on May 13
San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch stated that the rookie minicamp would kick off on May 12. However, that appears to be when first-year players can report to the team. The NFL announced today that the 49ers’ rookie minicamp would take place May 13-15, two weeks after the draft. It will be the first opportunity for 49ers coaches to see its latest draft class, which includes nine players, on the practice field. In addition, several undrafted free agents will join them, along with some players looking to try out for the team. The 49ers drafted the following players in the 2022 NFL Draft. Round 2: Drake Jackson, DE, USC Round 3: Ty Davis-Price, RB, LSU Round 3: Danny Gray, WR. EMS Round 4: Spencer Burford,

2022 NFL Draft: NFL experts hand out 49ers draft grades, love Drake Jackson pick
The 2022 NFL Draft is in the books, and the San Francisco 49ers find themselves with a draft class of nine players—five on defense and four on offense. It’s time for the coaching staff to focus on inserting its new pieces into the plan for the upcoming season. It’s also time for the media “experts” to hand out their annual grades of each NFL team’s most recent crop of rookies. Grades this early into the offseason don’t mean a whole lot when none of these rookies have yet to take an NFL snap or even been part of an offseason practice with their new clubs. But it’s one way to gauge the perception of how each team improved based on its pre-draft projected needs. Below are the grades issued by some of the more well-known analysts and writers within the media
